Hardmodem or Softmodem

--- I've always been sure that my modem is a hardmodem, never thought I could be wrong, but now I installed Windows XP and Linux Mandrake and I can not in any way make it work in either systems, I began to suspect that is a Softmodem. It is a Motorola SM56 ISA. By the way, which means the letters "SM" It would be "SOFT MODEM": roll: How do I know if it's for a hardmodem or SoftModem By size can already come to know He is a little bigger than my video card and sound, has two audio outputs: one for a microphone and speakers, and work without sound card. This is already a proof that is hardmodem Some kind soul can help me

--- Because it's ISA, it is probably hard. At the time the plates were made the ISA softmodems were not common (if it existed). But it's just a guess, not sure.
Another tip is to look at the number of ICs (chips) on the modem. Soft modems usually have at most two, the hard equanto may have four or more.

--- See the link:
http://www.comlinux.com.br/docs/comofazer/motorola.shtml
Now that confused me once ! : ---

Your modem must be ISA!
To configure an ISA modem eh easy (linux)! in the connective site has a good tutorial! you used the set serial of these details make the difference! ---

Modem motorola moden ki SUXXXXXX the worst I've seen --- hehehe

is easy. If the modem is just a file with a. Inf then it is a hardmodem. If a file type is SoftModem setup.exe.

Tb --- I think all ISA are hardmodem.
Softmodem is more recent.

--- Guess I'll be in a hardmodem. : Wink:

--- Never seen a SoftModem ISA (actually never seen an ISA slot: lol :: lol :: lol:).

--- Hello everybody ... Yes there is a modem isa. He is the PCTEL, year of manufacture 1996. I've had the biggest headache installing this modem on a computer. It turns out that even after installed, it does not dialed. Not that after much research I found that some older boards isa not work on irq greater than 9. When I went to see, the modem was on the irq 12, was enough to change irq 5 (under Windows, because the modem did not have any jumper) was.

--- And there, but it was 56K, but it was not v90. Then after a long battle I found the software update to V90. The person who bought this modem, was advised by me, that only buys isa modem, so it would be guaranteed that it was jampeado. After searching a lot of my friend found a store with modem isa 270 Reais, the girl said it was creative, but had to take in another store. When the modem arrived it was PCTEL, because the creative was missing, but even so my friend paid 270 reais, and I took the card to install. --- More

my friend suffered a lot trying to navigate with this modem, since his computer was a pentium100, and direct connection drops. Then I defiz modem installation, and asked them to take to the store and tried to change, arguing that the modem was with defect. The technicians of the store, after a long European Union, nor able to install and had to switch the modem from my friend ... but they wished to exchange for a jampeado, exchanged for a U.S. Robotics winmodem. In short sold my friend a winmodem worth 40 at the time the real price of 270 reais a jampeado.
Landmarks Leno - Fortaleza

--- What is a hardmodem and SoftModem What's the difference ---

Finally found something!
Stratovarius
dah a look at this SM was right when he said - SoftModem! For me it was a surprise, live and learn! ---

read it there, as well explicadinho tah!
When I said ISA this post, I meant hardmodem, hehehe! confuse me! --- Hello everyone

Forum!!!
To the dismay of our fellow SM56K SoftModem Motorola is a very basic, both in the ISA and PCI versions, incidentally, to get rid of the possibility of acquiring a SoftModem there is only one way out: buy an external modem That's right, now only external modems are hardmodens, most inmates is SoftModem.
This is a matter of strategy to sell and profit from very poor quality equipment, you buy a cheap 56Kbps modem V90-full of features at a very low price, but has an inscription saying SoftModem </ B> or something, the only hint is that softmodens need relatively powerful processor and a decent amount of RAM, Hence if you find in the inscriptions of the modem box something like:
: arrow: Minimum equipment MMX Pentium 200 or Pentium 200 and 32MB RAM, you can suspect, is SoftModem same.
bought a Motorola SM56 time but these have played out, the feature KFlex SoftModem is good but is very unstable because in fact you use a software that installs via CD-Rom or floppy disk to run like a normal modem, in other words there is a special program which is loaded into RAM memory that does the job using the modem as a modem processor.
Then you realize that the machine's performance falls too, after all the mathematical processor - the main CPU-FPU - such as the Pentium - turns out to be using in place of the modem chip math.
Another tip is to see that the inner-SoftModem pci, isa, is small and, especially, comes with only a chip plant, which is the communication be careful not to confuse the chip to communicate with components such as resistors and capacitors, chip communication has capsulamento black plastic and probably a few numerical entries, maybe two.
The hardmodem, also known as a modem complete because it comes with both chip communication standard UART as the modulator. Just complete this modem has two chips alike, only different in size, and other components that usually comes as buffers etc..
I hope I have contributed positively. --- Thanks

same people, now I know that Motorola is just one Softmodem. Wow, I thought I could distinguish a Softmodem a hardmodem ops:, little did I know that Motorola was a Softmodem, Previously I had problems with connection drops, then I updated the driver and the problem is over, no idea it was a SoftModem, precisely because it is ISA and for being a bit old. I have a friend who has a USRobotics ISA, and as he did not need him, I offered to swap for my Motorola modem USRobotics saying that it was better, but I thought my modem was fine and ended up not changing. ops: Now I'll see if I can go back and get the USRobotics!

--- Yes, I changed my Motorola SoftModem hardmodem by USRobotics. The problem that this modem is 14,000 K! This means that the maximum download rate I'm gonna get with this modem is a mere 1.75 KB per second
